The CommaLab invites you to this exhibition So Nerd. The participants are students of the Multimedia Department of Xiamen University Art College.

 

We’ve chosen a word which can fit the commonness of these youths when decided the name of this exhibition, nerd. The original definition of nerd was used for describe people indulged in comics, while recently it’s being defined widely as “people who’s indulged into sub-culture that hard to be understand by populace and hard to communicate”. Besides, our society begins to have different attitudes with nerd people, and starts to affirm those who have rich knowledge in certain areas. Three basic conditions for being a nerd people are: the first, highly capable of information searching; second, has the adaptability to the explosion of internet information, ability of cross fields information searching, can explain and research detail to the secret signs from internet originators; third, desire of upgrading and self-expression.

 

Our exhibition “So Nerd” has meanings of two levels in Chinese: the way we nerd-ing (we nerd-ing in a different way); another meaning is very nerd. These students use these works to express their particular visual angle and experience. These works related to their special background of growing and environment greatly.
